AGAPE CHURCH HISTORY:
Agape Church was originally known as State Fair Avenue Church of God and was built in 1900. The educational wing of the Church was built in 1954. It is located at 36 East State fair avenue at the corner of Coventry street, on Detroit's north east side. State Fair Avenue Church of God is 54, 000 square feet, two story church designed in Romanesque Revival architectural style. State Fair Church of God has an all red-brick exterior with a flat narrow brick column that decorated the entire façade of the Church. The main entrance of the State Fair Avenue Church of God featured a brick, covered porch that had two stairways on each side of the porch. The stairways meet up at the brick porch and was extended out from the rest of the building. The covered porch is supported by two brick columns and a metal balustrade that was located on the front of the porch, in between each set of stairs. The extended covered porch is crowned with a stone cornice. The front façade of the church has two of the tall flat, brick columns that extended vertical and up through the roof line cornice. Located above the covered porch and between the two brick columns on the façade, a large arched window serves as the church's' centerpiece and main window accenting the natural light. This large arch window is bordered in curve brick detail and crowned with a stone-quoin at the top arch. Each of the panes of the window are original wooden mullions. On the façade of the State Fair Avenue Church of God and located on each side of the covered porch there are two small rectangular windows. Directly above each of the small rectangular windows, there was another window. These windows are both arched and bordered in curved brick design and feature a stone-quoin as the crown. The roofline of the State Fair Avenue Church of God is pitched cornice that extended upward and formed a peak at the center of the church's exterior. The most prominent feature of the State Fair Church of God is the church's giant steeple. The steeple itself is a tall, narrow, copper, cone-like design and crowned with a cross. The steeple rises from a tall, brick chimney like extension that comes from the back wing of the church. State Fair Avenue Church of God features a rectangular floor plan that consists of the sanctuary, balcony, six bathrooms, large Fellowship Hall, kitchen, Food Pantry, large Conference room, Bookstore, Sound room, large Pastors office, and five classrooms. State Fair Avenue Church of God eventually had some major problems with the building, such as a leaky roof, and outdated plumbing. In 2011, State Fair Avenue Church of God was finally closed, and the congregation left. The Church was quickly looted by scrappers, destroyed by vandals and had major water damage. Although the State Fair Avenue Church was abandoned, it did not stay that way for long. In 2012, another congregation by the name of Prophetic Corner Deliverance Ministries announced that they had purchased the former State Fair Avenue Church of God. Prophetic Corner Deliverance did eventually clean up the church and services resumed by 2013. In 2015, Prophetic Deliverance Ministries foreclosed and the building was purchased by Magic Solutions from Wayne County. Again the Church was looted , vandalized and gutted of electrical wiring, plumbing, and heating ducts. Its arched windows were broken, and the roof had major leaks creating water damage to the floors, walls, ceilings and foundation. The Church had a substantial amount of damage and debris. It was inhospitable and on the verge of becoming condemned. In 2020, Sandra White told Dr. Samuel White, III about the abandon, dilapidated Church building. Dr. White bought the Church from Magic Solutions and became the founder and pastor of Agape Church. Dr. White and family removed the debris, repaired the arched windows, replaced the roof, plastered the walls, repainted the interior and exterior of the Church, restored pews, replaced the carpet, and repainted the entire sanctuary. Dr. White installed new plumbing, new furnace, replaced electrical wiring and cabinets, new exterior sign, refurbished kitchen and classrooms. The Church is in the process of being restored to its former glory. In 2022, Dr. Samuel White, III became the founder and President of Agape Theological Seminary, which was established as an online, non-denominational, intergenerational, multicultural seminary inspire by agape to educate, equip and empower people to serve in the Church and community. Agape Theological Seminary also known as Agape Institute for Ministry is one of the ministries of Agape Church. On March 3, 2024 Sandra White was ordained at Agape Church and became the Assistant Pastor. On March 31st, 2024 Easter Sunday morning Agape Church officially opened to the public and six members to joined. Donate to the Church
Agape Church is in the process of being rebuilt and restored to its former glory. There is still a lot of work that needs to be done. The looters, vandalizers and scavengers stripped the Church of its plumbing, electrical wiring, and heating ducts. The windows were broken, the roof had massive leaks, walls were deteriorating, bathrooms were inoperable, floors were buckling, ceilings crumbling and rooms were full of garbage. The Church was totally gutted and inhospitable.
Thus far, we were able to get rid of all the debris, replace the roof, repair the windows, paint the exterior of the Church, repair the sanctuary wall, and replace the carpet in Sancturary. We have come along way; however, we have a long way to go. We ask that you make a donation toward one of the following projects:
1. Hammond B2 Organ
2. Handicamp Ramp
3. Elevator
4. Church Van
5. Church Parking Lot and Fencing
